Educational Purpose - Perceptual

There are three areas of motor development to consider in this domain. Gross motor involves the whole body andi ts movement. Fine motors uses the small muscles of the hands and feet, and perceptual motor involves the ability to take in and interpret information from the environment and respond to it motorically.

Follow the leader

Materials

  1. Again, you will need one very patient dog
  2. A variety of materials to use for the consturction of an obstacle course

Activity

Construct an obstacle course using your gathered materials that is age appropriate for your students. Practice taking your canine friend through the course several times until he is feeling confident. With you in the actual lead (your canine friend thinks he is leading, that's OK), have the children follow the dog through the course.

Benefits

  • Exercise for a variety of large muscles
  • Practice with positional words (under, over, across, etc.)
  • Remembering a sequence
  • Motor planning
