Dog Therapy

Educational Purpose - Social / Emotional

In this domain children learn the skills, behaviors and the expectations of their family and society. This socialization process revolves around a child's relationship with other people. Promoting positive social skils in the young child leads to many of life's successes. Some children have difficulty demonstration positive social skills, so using a canine companion as a motivational tool can encourage acceptable behaviors.

Bailey Bits

Materials

  1. Classroom and special education teacher (you will possibly need other support personnel to implement this behavior intervention)
  2. Canine colleague who knows some "tricks"
  3. Construction paper bones (we inscribe our bones with "Bailey Bits" because students earn a "bit" of time with Bailey)

Activity

Teachers develop a positive behavior intervention to encourage the behavrior that routunely needs to be demonstrated. The coupons are given to the student every time an acceptable behaior is demonstrated. The coupons are then redeemed for time with the school dog (extra playground time, scooter board rides, a game of "Fine-It", etc.)

Benefits

  • Learning to work toward a goal
  • Understanding that positive social behaviors and a good work ethic are valued in our school
  • Developing an understanding of cause and effect relationships
